Location: Shire of Ramsgaard, An Tir (Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada)
Persona Information: Katrynka Chornovoloskaya (the surname translates to "Raven hair" -
inspired by a song that my former lord wrote for me comparing my hair to the color of a Raven's wings) is a late 16th C Moldavian (Ukrainian) orphan who was the only survivor in her family of an Ottoman attack on the village of Chernivtsy, situated on the banks of the Prut River,
making her the sole heir to her father's fortune (he was a very rich and well traveled merchant). She survived by disguising herself as a serving wench and then gaining the favor of a Germanic mercenary that was part of the raiding party. Under his protection, she prospered. They traveled extensively through Western Europe, until one day the lord was offered a mercinary job that was too good to resist and he left Katrynka to her own means. She is currently in the process of traveling back to her home. Although she enjoys her travels, she was becoming very homesick for family and homeland so, when her protector left, she decided it was time to travel back home. Katrynka enjoys doing counted cross-stitch, cutwork and other types of embroidery, as well as making Pysanky and occassionally doing some calligraphy. She also designs her own clothing for her servants to make for her and decorates the garments with her own embroidery and other embelishments.
SCA Interests: I am the current Mistress of Arts and Sciences for Ramsgaard, as well as being Ramsgaard's Chronicler. I have been involved with the SCA for 4 1/2 years. I am mainly involved with my costuming and embroidery as that is the majority of my experience in the SCA.
Other Information: I started sewing when I was 7 and started doing embroidery at about the same time (24 years ago). My mother taught me how to sew, and her mother (my Baba) taught me how to do Ukrainian cross-stitch. Several years later Baba also taught me how to make Pysanky (Ukrainian easter eggs) -- a tradition that dates back to pagan times. I have one of the best jobs for someone who loves to costume -- I work at Fabricland, a cross-Canada chain of fabric stores totalling 100+ stores (50+ in western Canada). FUN! I am also currently working on desinging the cover for my mom's soon to be published book, as well as writing and calligraphing the poem that will be on the back cover.
