Persona Information: Katja was born in 925 A.D. in the Khazar city of Khazaran-Itil
by the Volga River, the youngest of several children to David and Rebekka.
Widowed and childless, she now works in the bakery, sieving and kneading
ground barley and wheat for the Khagan's court and the grand judicial
council with its mysterious membership of Jews, Christians, Moslems, and
pagans! The daughter of a rabbi, she properly learnt to read the Talmud and
Torah, to write Hebrew-Aramaic, and has picked up bits of the Persian,
Armenian, Byzantine, and other strange tongues from her visits to the
marketplace to purchase fish, spices, silk cloth, and candlewax. Sadly, her
brothers and father have all perished in the city's frighteningly increasing
wars with the Rus north of the Volga and the Caucasus Mountains and the Huns
and Magyars across the Caspian and Black Seas. She wishes sometimes that she
could visit that marvelous city of wonders, Constantinople, but it is
several weeks travel by sea and she needs to support her widowed mother...
and traveling is much too dangerous in these times anyway.
SCA Interests: Khazar research, Medieval cooking and baking, herbalism and
herbal medicine, Medieval dancing, Middle Eastern dancing, Middle Eastern
and Medieval Russian garb, target archery and crossbow, drumming,
calligraphy and illumination, equestrian practice, chirurgeonate studies.
Other Information: Current kingdom archivist and waiver secretary, current
baronial co-chronicler, chirurgeon-in-training; former baronial
seneschale. Found the SCA in 1985
during college (big surprise!) but was fringey until 1987. I attended Paul's
first Researching Things Slavic class and have been a lurking member of the
SIG since it's inception. I've been the head cook for over a dozen feasts in
the past five years, and helped with scores more feasts over the past
decade. I love to teach classes at demos and events, even when I'm the head
cook in the kitchen - some of my recent ones have been a period pasta making
demonstration, several bread baking demonstrations, a sausage-making
demonstration, how to evaluate period cookbooks and food history books, how
to research period cooking online, common herbs in Medieval gardens and
kitchens, and period poison antidotes. Mundanely, I'm a book editor for a
large legal publishing firm and live with a gorgeous long-haired fencer and
two lazy felines on a lovely wooded property by Lake Ontario.
